N. Janeil Sowards

MA, LPC, LAC

Hello! Welcome to Safe Haven Counseling. I’m glad you stopped by. Allow me to introduce myself:

I am a licensed professional counselor (LPC), a licensed addiction counselor (LAC), and I am also trained in trauma processing (PTSD) using EMDR (eye movement desensitization reprocessing). I have experience treating relationship issues with couples and families, and I am an approved provider for the Domestic Violence Offender Management Board.  I have a clinical master’s degree in psychology with 22 years of counseling/psychotherapy experience serving both adults and adolescents. LGBTQ+ friendly.

I provide in-person and online individual therapy using a CBT, solution-focused, trauma-focused, and client-centered approach…. meaning I am a safe and supportive sounding board to help you make connections between your mind, body, and emotions… and it’s all about you. I tailor my approach to your individual needs and personality. My goal is to provide a safe space to process concerns and provide skills, education, and renewed hope. Taking the first step to better yourself is often the hardest. What you will discover through therapy is a powerful perspective to understand your past in order to better manage your future.

My Approach

WELLNESS and CHANGE

Twenty-nine years ago, life threw me a curveball. Without skills and only limited healthy supports, eventually I realized I was coping in unhealthy ways. When a friend suggested therapy, I found a different path. Asking for help was uncomfortable and humbling; yet, the support, validation, and knowledge I experienced as a client, helped me find safety and peace.

As a therapist, my focus is on safety, wellness and change. My psychotherapy model utilizes multiple approaches, as mentioned above, CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy), EMDR, DBT, solution-focused, trauma-focused, etc.

I aim to provide a therapeutic environment where clients feel safe to speak freely, openly, and without judgement. I offer a holistic (whole-person) approach as symptoms may not only manifest as psychological problems, but also as medical and/or interpersonal challenges. Typically, humans seek support when issues become unmanageable or unbearable and everyone prefers to handle their issues alone to avoid being judged or labeled. Asking for help takes courage. You’ve already taken the first step. Congratulations!

During session, we will explore life experiences that cause emotional pain. Unresolved issues can impact school and work performance, damage relationships, interfere with healthy parenting, hinder financial stability, and even interfere with our daily commute. They can impede attention, increase conflict, and disrupt sleep. Energy, mood, diet, and especially substance use are all impacted.

The Bad News: Typically, issues repeat until they repair (i.e., the same patterns surface in other situations and relationships until change occurs.)

THE GOOD NEWS: Therapy works! Together, we will find solutions, create change, and complete the “repeat and repair” cycle. There is hope.

Who do I work with? Individuals, couples, families…adults and adolescents.
